Financial analysis of the Football Industry

Financial analysis of the Football Industry

December 14, 2022 0 By m4rciobuarque

Initially, FLUCONOMiCS was a newsletter whose initial idea was to analyze Fluminense Football Club’s finances in depth. Additionally, it intended to assess its management independently and exercise a supervisory role, which I understood at the time did not exist.

So, the newsletter started to bring information managers didn’t like to get them out of their comfort zones. The main objective was to combat the countless fallacious narratives and counteract the impressive effort of disinformation. There is an apparent coordinated effort in social networks and portals dedicated to sports coverage to manipulation. The newsletter seeks to force a continuous search for improvements, rupture with the model and the system, and a planned and necessary rebellion.

But after six months of existence, it became clear that FLUCONOMiCS could not be limited to Fluminense. The subjects that were addressed, and especially the schedule of scheduled editions, go far beyond a single club. And many issues apply to different clubs, and all of them are embedded in various environments and problem instances.

The issues brought up for debate could even be misinterpreted and attributed to a single club when they are issues that affect football globally.

As a result, FLUCONOMiCS changed its approach in the newsletter and on Twitter.

It is necessary to antagonize the associative models in several clubs. Football clubs must be the endgame, not a means to an end for people.

And who knows, we could seek solutions and alternatives, train new, more technical staff, and raise the critical sense that existed and was utterly lost in recent years.

FLUCONOMiCS aims, based on more accurate and impartial diagnoses, without connections with power projects, to work effectively in the continuity and transformation of football.

In this context of speaking far beyond Fluminense, the newsletter’s baptism serves as a signal for the team I support. It mitigates that boring discussion of who writes something that dislikes rivals A, B, or C. Fluminense will be used in the vast majority of analyses and comments, as we are historically pioneers (at least we were). Changes always need to start somewhere place.

The new initiative in WordPress

Everything was going relatively well with the Twitter+Revue combo until they announced that the service hosting the newsletter would be discontinued.

I always wanted a contingency plan, and while migrating the newsletter to Substack, I put it into practice through WordPress.

But WordPress has a plethora of exciting additional features, so it will never be a mere contingency plan for a newsletter. It will take some time for everything to be put into practice, but I intend to host much more here besides the FLUCONOMiCS editions, mainly a lot of content that ends up lost in the dynamics of a social network like Twitter.

About the independence of FLUCONOMiCS

I currently have no commercial relationship with associative models in football clubs in Brazil, much less intend to say what amateur managers want to hear to earn on top of the hard-earned money that fans pour into the hands of these models. I didn’t do that while I was in a Big 4. Imagine outside that environment and without commercial pressures and billing targets. I understand this is essential to establish independence and not walk on eggshells.

Nor am I an associative member of Fluminense. I do not believe in the associative model. I also understand that democratization does not apply to businesses of a private nature.

I am sure that the lack of criteria in the selection and recruitment of members of the clubs’ directive deliberative and fiscal councils contributes significantly to the insolvency of Fluminense and dozens of other Brazilian clubs, in addition to bringing problems to clubs around the world.

Associative models are the root cause of the bad management that we mistakenly get used to living with.

I am also not part of political groups. I was never part of those, maybe even by accident or an absolute lack of time when I could have been abducted by it. Sometimes we get lucky in life.

By now, it should have been clear. Still, it bears mentioning that I have no political aspirations.

I am not a member and therefore am statutorily disqualified from having political ambitions. Besides that, I do not desire to exercise any position at Fluminense under the auspices of associative models. Associative models provide significant salaries; however, I still consider them insufficient for annoyance.

This portal will bring much more detail than I will write below, but in short, FLUCONOMiCS stands on a tripod:

  1. I have extensive experience in due diligence, audits, and consulting projects, including some pioneers in football clubs;
  2. I am an extremely frustrated fan at seeing one of the biggest football clubs become insolvent and hostage to people in business and managers of dubious quality;
  3. I’m tired of biased coverage, narratives, and shallow analysis.

For now, most tweets are written in Portuguese, but Twitter’s translation tool isn’t the worst.
